Dog Whispering

Dog Whispering

There is a truth behind dog whispering that everyone should be aware of.  “Whispering” includes kicking, jabbing, hitting, flipping, pinning to the ground, electrical shock, choking, and pinching as a means of training.  Dog whispering is not a method, or an ideology recommended by a single reputable organization.  Keep in mind that “trainers” who practice dog whispering have no legitimate training in the science of animal learning.  Instead, they rely on trying to read a dog’s mind.  Several dog whisper trainers have been charged on animal abuse for the harsh and painful methods that they use.

The science of dog behavior and learning has a long history of legitimate study. Modern dog trainers apply this science to implement humane and efficient training and behavior protocols.  It is proven that dogs learn by association and consequence (also referred to as classical and operant conditioning).  Look at the world from your dog’s eyes.  They view the world as safe or unsafe and make decisions accordingly.  Dogs live in the moment and do not have the intellectual morality and can’t feel guilt and formulating plots out of revenge.

There are many studies which have shown that punishment is reinforcing to the punisher.  This means that the actual act of punishment makes the punisher feel better.  Unfortunately, we live in a world where people want a quick fix.  Despite the better advice of real behavior experts and the obvious side effects of using force and pain, it is important to not be fooled!
