Dog Actors

Dog Actors

It is more common today to see cute dog’s appearing in movies all around the globe. We often wonder what it takes for a dog to be successful in the movie business. Your dog must have more than just good looks to be an actor. Honestly, it’s a skill! While a dog’s appearance will always be important, the ability to follow commands is even more important. Dog actors must be able to consistently sit, lay down, head up or down, stay, and speak. While filming a scene, the owner or trainer may be up to 10 feet away and unable to give voice commands. This means that the dog will need to rely on hand cues. Another thing is that dogs should also have good concentration and not be easily distracted by people, loud noises, the film crew, equipment and lighting, or sudden movement.

Depending on the role, additional skills may be required. Your dog may have to learn new tricks along the way as this allows them to interact with other actors in natural and convincing ways. Some roles require specific breeds which offer different sizes and colors. Casting directors are looking for the happiest and healthiest dogs. Keep in mind that just like human acting, there is no clear path to stardom. Oddly enough, many acting dogs are found at shelters by trainers who often contact casting directors. There are also many talent agencies that represent animals and are always looking for the best canine talent!

There are two ways to get in front of a casting director:

Casting Calls – These are held when a casting director is looking for new talent. Any pet can attend an open casting call and be seen for a role. Look on the Internet as there are many dedicated websites that list available pet casting calls in your area. Social media is another great way to find out more information!

Auditions – This is normally by invitation only. Major TV and film roles, and commercials are usually cast this way. Auditions for animal roles are very similar to auditions for human roles. The animal has an opportunity to perform a scene in front of a casting director. There may be several rounds involved to find the best fit for the role.

It is best to have professional photos of your dog if you want to submit them for an acting role. They must accurately show what your dog looks like. Be sure to include close-ups as well as full body shots! Try to have a variety of photos that really show your dog’s personality. For more experienced canine actors, you should have a short video, or acting reel that should highlights of past work.

What are you waiting for? Your four-legged friend may be on their way to stardom!
