Spotlight Breed: Akita Shepherd

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This is where we feature a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! We are excited to spotlight the Akita Shepherd today. This is a mixed breed dog – a cross between the Akita and the German Shepherd. They are loyal and hard-working, inheriting some of the best traits from their parents. Keep in mind that the Akita Shepherd may also be known as the Shepkita. There is a lot to learn about this breed!

The Akita Shepherd’s German Shepherd parent originated in the 1800s and was bred in Germany as a sheep herder. One of the most interesting facts about the breed is that the Germans quickly recognized the breed’s intelligence and employed it as a courier dog in the German military in both World War I and II. The Akita is an ancient breed from the Odate region of Japan. In the mid-1900s, Akitas were declared a national treasure of Japan and considered spiritual symbols of protection, health, happiness, and longevity.

You may be curious about the appearance of the Akita Shepherd. They have the body of a German Shepherd and the face and tail of the Akita. Generally, the breed will have medium-sized, erect ears, dark eyes, and a scissor bite muzzle. They also have a tail which curls upwards and has a full, plush coating. They are very muscular and strong!

This is a very serious breed. Akita Shepherds are reserved and aloof like both of its parents. They have a natural inclination to guard and protect, and their personalities reflect this impulse in most situations. They are also very energetic and playful! Unfortunately, these dogs are not the best with strangers, other animals, or children. However, some issues may be addressed through proper training. Therefore, early socialization paired with positive reinforcement will set them up for success and well manners.
