How Dog Kennels Are Supposed to Be “Safe Spaces”

Dog kennels, often referred to as crates, are designed to be safe
spaces where dogs can retreat to feel secure and comfortable. When
used correctly, a kennel can become a haven for your dog, providing
them with a sense of security and a place to relax. The key to
creating a safe space is to ensure the kennel is a positive
environment that your dog associates with comfort and safety, not
punishment.

To start, choose a kennel that is appropriately sized for your dog. It
should be large enough for them to stand up, turn around, and lie down
comfortably, but not so large that it feels overwhelming. Line the
kennel with soft bedding or a crate pad to make it cozy. Placing a few
of your dog’s favorite toys inside can also help create a positive
association with the space.

Introduce your dog to the kennel gradually. Allow them to explore it
at their own pace, using treats and praise to encourage them to enter.
Initially, leave the door open so your dog can come and go freely,
building their confidence and comfort level. Over time, you can start
closing the door for short periods while you are at home, gradually
increasing the duration as your dog becomes more accustomed to the
kennel.

It’s important to use the kennel responsibly. Never use it as a form
of punishment, as this can create negative associations and anxiety.
Instead, make the kennel a positive place by feeding your dog meals
inside it and giving them special treats or chew toys while they are
