Scrub a Dub Dub: Tips for Bathing Your Dog
It’s no surprise that most dogs would rather not take a bath. However, bathing plays a huge role in the health of your dog. Not only that, but they’ll smell great! Unlike humans, dogs don’t require daily baths. In fact, bathing once a month works well for most dogs, unless they find themselves in a huge mess! The type of breed will also determine how many baths to give your dog. Check with your Veterinarian for advice. How should you give your dog a bath though? Follow these helpful tips!
- Brush your dog prior to bath time. It’s better to get matted hair and dirt off prior to the bath. It makes for much easier cleanup!
- Lukewarm water is the way to go. The bigger the dog, the cooler the water is a general rule. Dogs have different skin compared to humans to be careful that the water is not too hot for them.
- Make it a fun activity. Don’t act like it’s a “bad” thing after all. Continue to praise your dog throughout the bath and reward them when you’re finished!
- Do not use human shampoo. Human shampoo is known to dry out dog’s skin. Go for a shampoo which is geared especially towards dogs.
- Be sure to rinse well. Don’t leave soap left on their coat. It could irritate their skin.
- It’s time to dry off the pup! Congratulations, you made it through bath time!
