Dogs & Essential Oils: Safe & Unsafe

The society today is making a great attempt at exploring the holistic side of things, thus exploring alternative ways to heal.  One example is essential oils.  In a nutshell, essential oils are the essence of a plant which is distilled and prepared for people to bring the power of nature into their homes.  There are many benefits which come from oils, but it is critical to determine if they benefit or harm dogs.

Safe

Chamomile – This is an oil which aids anxiety and stress.  Chamomile is great for a dog who is super uptight and stressed.

Frankincense – This oil places high focus on immunity and cell repair.  If you suspect that your four-legged friend is feeling a bit off, this is the oil for you.

Lavender – Relaxation!  This is another oil which will promote relaxation.

Peppermint – Achoo!!  Dogs can have seasonal allergies as well.  Peppermint oil can help support a healthy respiratory system and be used to ease joint pain.

Unsafe

Citrus – This type of oil may smell good to us, but it can harm dogs in many ways.  Citrus oils bring on a wave of symptoms including vomiting, lethargy and even signs of a seizure.

Pine – As odd as it sounds, pine oil can cause liver and central nervous system damage.

Tea Tree – This oil is so beneficial to humans, yet so harmful to dogs.  Symptoms can range from minor side effects like skin irritation to vomiting.

We are sure that you are wondering how to administer safe essential oils to your pup.  You can apply the oils topically or administer them through a diffuser.  Always remember that just because something says “natural”, that it is not always healthy.  Please contact your Veterinarian immediately if you discover that your dog has been in contact with a harmful essential oil.
